How to Get Coconut Cream

Y’all have probably noticed that coconut cream is a regular occurrence in my recipes; what’s good about coconut cream, is that it is so easy to get, and once you have can of coconut milk on hand, you’re set! All you have to do is follow a couple easy steps -listed below- and then you have yourself some coconut cream.

First things first, if you are new to the idea of coconut cream, it is the fat removed from a can of coconut milk. Instead of using butter or oil in recipes, I usually opt for a lower calorie option: coconut cream. My two favorite brands can be found here and here. Although pure coconut cream is also sold in cans, I prefer to use coconut milk because I get the best of both worlds: coconut cream and coconut water. The best way to get the cream is by putting a can of coconut milk into the fridge and leaving it overnight. The next day, the fat, which is thick and creamy , would have either risen to the top or sunk to the bottom of the can. Spoon off the cream, and Wa-Lah, you have got your self a magical substance!

Because I do not use much of the cream in one recipe, I like to store it in the fridge in a plastic or Tupperware container for later use throughout the week.

*The canned coconut cream and milk are best used within 3-5 days!
